Authenticated Supplications of Hajj
A Step-by-Step Guide for the Mufrid Pilgrim
From the 8th of Dhul-Hijjah
All supplications herein are authentically established in the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ and the Noble Quran.
1. Ihram & Talbiyah
Begin your journey by entering Ihram at the Miqat or from Makkah if you are already there, stating your intention:
لبيك اللهم حجاً
“O Allah, I respond to You for Hajj.”
📖 Sahih Muslim — Book of Hajj, no. 1211
Then raise your voice with the Talbiyah:
لبيك اللهم لبيك، لبيك لا شريك لك لبيك، إن الحمد والنعمة لك والملك، لا شريك لك
“Here I am, O Allah, here I am. Here I am; You have no partner; here I am. Truly all praise, grace and sovereignty belong to You. You have no partner.”
📖 Sahih al-Bukhari no. 1549 & Sahih Muslim no. 1184 (Agreed Upon)
♦ Sunnah: Repeat the Talbiyah continuously while walking, riding, ascending and descending, from Ihram until the first stone of Jamarat al-Aqabah on the Day of Nahr (10th Dhul-Hijjah).
2. Tawaf
Enter the Masjid al-Haram with your right foot first and say:
بسم الله، والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله، اللهم افتح لي أبواب رحمتك
“In the name of Allah; peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy.”
📖 Sahih Muslim no. 713
At each start of a circuit (facing the Black Stone — Hajar al-Aswad):
بسم الله، الله أكبر
“In the name of Allah; Allah is the Greatest.”
📖 Sahih al-Bukhari — Book of Hajj, no. 1613
Between the Yemeni Corner (al-Rukn al-Yamani) and the Black Stone in every circuit:
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
“Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” (Quran 2:201)
📖 Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1892 — Sahih chain
During the rest of the circuits, supplicate freely and repeat:
سبحان الله، والحمد لله، ولا إله إلا الله، والله أكبر
“Glory be to Allah; Praise be to Allah; None has the right to be worshipped but Allah; Allah is the Greatest.”
📖 Agreed Upon — Virtues of Dhikr
♦ Note: No specific supplication is authentically established for each individual circuit. The Sunnah is to engage in free du’a, dhikr, and Quran recitation throughout Tawaf.
3. Sa’y
As you approach al-Safa for the first circuit, recite:
إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِنْ شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ
“Indeed, al-Safa and al-Marwah are among the symbols of Allah.” (Quran 2:158) — Recite upon first approaching al-Safa only.
📖 Sahih Muslim no. 1218
Upon standing on al-Safa and al-Marwah — repeat three times, with personal du’a between each repetition:
لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له، له الملك وله الحمد وهو على كل شيء قدير، لا إله إلا الله وحده، أنجز وعده، ونصر عبده، وهزم الأحزاب وحده
“None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, without partner. To Him belongs dominion and all praise, and He is Powerful over all things. He alone fulfilled His promise, gave victory to His servant, and defeated the confederates alone.”
📖 Sahih Muslim — Book of Hajj, no. 1218
♦ Sunnah: Men should walk briskly between the two green fluorescent lights (the valley area). Repeat the above dhikr on both al-Safa and al-Marwah, making personal du’a between repetitions.
4. The Day of Arafah
The Day of Arafah is the greatest pillar of Hajj. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Hajj is Arafah.” (Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1949 — Sahih). Raise your hands and repeat frequently:
لا إله إلا الله وحده لا شريك له، له الملك وله الحمد وهو على كل شيء قدير
“None has the right to be worshipped but Allah alone, without partner. To Him belongs dominion and all praise, and He is Powerful over all things.”
📖 Jami’ al-Tirmidhi no. 3585 — The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘The best of what I and the Prophets before me have said on the evening of Arafah.’
“O Allah, I ask You for pardon and well-being in this world and in the Hereafter.”
📖 Sunan Ibn Majah no. 3849 — Sahih
“O Allah, forgive me what I have done and what I will do, what I have concealed and what I have declared, what I have committed in excess, and what You know of me better than I. You are the Bringer Forward and the Delayer; none has the right to be worshipped but You.”
📖 Sahih Muslim no. 771
♦ Important: No long specific supplication is authentically established for Arafah. Widely-circulated lengthy prayers attributed to the Prophet ﷺ for Arafah have no sound basis. The Sunnah is to raise one’s hands and supplicate abundantly with one’s own words.
5. Muzdalifah
After sunset, proceed from Arafah to Muzdalifah and combine Maghrib and Isha prayers. After Fajr, face the Qiblah and engage in dhikr and du’a until daybreak.
♦ Note: No specific wording is authentically established for Muzdalifah. Engage in general dhikr and supplication. The elderly, women and the frail may proceed to Mina after midnight.
Repeat abundantly at Muzdalifah before and after Fajr prayer.
📖 Sahih Muslim no. 1218
6. Rami al-Jamarat
Cast seven consecutive pebbles at Jamarat al-Aqabah on the Day of Nahr (10th), saying with each pebble:
الله أكبر
“Allah is the Greatest.” — Say it with every single pebble (7 times total).
📖 Sahih al-Bukhari — Book of Hajj, no. 1750
♦ Sunnah: The Talbiyah ends with the first pebble of Jamarat al-Aqabah. Do not stand for du’a after stoning Jamarat al-Aqabah al-Kubra.
After stoning the small and middle Jamarahs (11th, 12th, 13th): Stand facing the Qiblah and make a lengthy du’a. Begin with:
“O Allah, make it an accepted Hajj, a forgiven sin, and an appreciated endeavour.”
📖 Mustadrak al-Hakim 1/632 — Sahih chain
7. Tawaf al-Wada’ — Farewell Tawaf
Farewell Tawaf is obligatory for every able pilgrim. It follows the same rulings as regular Tawaf. Between the Yemeni Corner and the Black Stone in every circuit:
رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ
“Our Lord, grant us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.” (Quran 2:201)
📖 Sunan Abu Dawud no. 1892
Upon exiting the Masjid al-Haram, step out with your left foot and say:
بسم الله والصلاة والسلام على رسول الله، اللهم إني أسألك من فضلك
“In the name of Allah; peace and blessings upon the Messenger of Allah. O Allah, I ask You from Your bounty.”
📖 Sahih Muslim no. 713
♦ Note: No specific farewell supplication facing the Ka’bah is authentically established. The Sunnah is to engage in dhikr and send blessings upon the Prophet ﷺ before departing.
May Allah accept your Hajj, forgive your sins, and reward your efforts.
“Whoever performs Hajj and does not commit any obscenity or sin returns like the day his mother gave birth to him.” — Agreed Upon
